![]() My Ántonia is one of her best-loved books, and it displays all the characteristics that make Cather both elusive and fascinating even as it depicts a world that vanished almost as soon as the novel was published. Forty-five years is a long career for a novelist, but she possessed an intensity of observation and a curiosity about human psychology, especially as it relates to nature, that never waned. ![]() ![]() Her last novel appeared in 1940, and a volume of three more stories was published in 1948, shortly after she died. Cather’s first book of poetry came out in 1903, when she was twenty-nine her first book of stories followed a couple years later, when she was thirty-one. ![]() Willa Cather was not a flashy stylist, and though she was ambitious in her work, she did not attach it to a publicity-worthy life like some of her contemporaries, such as Ernest Hemingway and F. ![]()

Drenched in atmosphere, it gives vivid depictions of snowy Russia while magical scenes set the backdrop of Arthur’s unhappy marriage and move to Russia, eerie portrayals of Rasputin and the czar’s family, and the rise of Trotsky and Lenin. Ransome is also the author of Old Peter’s Russian Tales, and the first part of the novel reads like one of his folk tales. ![]() The book is divided into three distinct parts (just one of many fairy-tale “threes”). Originally published in 2007 in the U.K., this import tells how Arthur Ransome, British author of children’s books, including the popular series Swallows and Amazons, became a spy as Russia went to war with itself. Sedgwick plays on the fairy-tale motif to spin an intriguing tale that weaves together a famous children’s writer and the Russian Revolution. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But when Delilah moves back to teach school, Evan must wrestle with feelings he’s tried so hard to put in the past. My main complaint is the insta-love fad that seems to have taken hold in romance literature. ![]() While I found them to be a bit of a generalization of teenage boys and girls, I do have to admit they are pretty accurate representations of some of that age group. It is very masterfully done, and the supporting characters are written very nicely as well. The most interesting thing I have to say about this novel is how the two main characters interactions affect their mindsets and personalities. Then there's Gwen, the good-girl trying to come out of her shell, not only for the boy, but also for other reasons I won't revel because of minor spoilers. You've got Grayson, the bad-boy trying to go good for cute girl. ![]() The Promise of Amazing is your typical, Young-Adult romance novel, and I don't mean that in a negative way. ![]() But sometimes you just need a cute romance story in your life. Normally I tend to stay in the Fantasy or Science-Fiction genre and only venture out when something gets enough hype to draw my attention, such as John Green's works. The Promise of Amazing pulled me in with the super cute cover. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What role does Paul play in Julia's development? How would you describe the quality of their marriage?Ĥ.
